The most promising office suite for free

LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice, and it inherits all the good and bad things from this development. At the moment that OpenOffice started to be controlled by Oracle, many of the developers that were part of the community of this office suite thought that it was a good idea to separate from the project, and that is how LibreOffice appeared.

Complete professional and free office suite.

Renovating OpenOffice

This office suite is now developed by The Document Foundation (previously known as the OpenOffice Community) and has been created using the latest stable version of OpenOffice that was launched prior to this separation. Thus, the interface has hardly changed, and the functions are still very similar, even though they have been improved.

LibreOffice's tools

As before, LibreOffice includes several professional quality tools:

  • Writer: text editor.
  • Calc: spreadsheets.
  • Base: database.
  • Impress: presentations.
  • Draw: diagrams and graphics.
  • Math: mathematic formula editor.

All in all, if you need an open source office suite that is free and very powerful, and with a large community of developers behind it, as well as all kinds of external support, LibreOffice is the new archetype.

Requirements and additional information:

  • Requires having Java installed.
